Food + Wine Spots Margaret River

Our long weekend was jam packed with winery and brewery visits, we ate alot of food and returned home with a couple of bottles of wine. Day one we explored the Dunsborough and Eagle Bay Area. Day two, we toured the region of Margaret River. As good as it was to visit all these wonderful places in a short space of time,  I think next trip I would much prefer to slow down the pace. There were a few I would love to return too, for a lazy afternoon of food and wine.

Here is a short write up of our itinerary for the Margaret River region in Western Australia

Cape Mentelle Winery

Cape mentelle

A large rustic winery that has been producing premium wines since 1977. Behind the counter is a beautiful oak barrel room. There are a number of wines only sold at the cellar door which makes the trip to the winery worth while. Cape Mentelle is a beautiful property with rolling hills of vines and native gardens. In summer there is an outdoor cinema. A couple of tours running include behind the scenes tour ($25.00) and a degustation tour and tasting ($80.00)

Voyager Estate Winery and Restaurant

Voyager estate

This beautiful winery was well worth the drive from Dunsborough, when you pull up you’ll see a gorgeous cape dutch manor which is the cellar door and restaurant. The main tasting bar sits under an extravagant chandelier. The staff wear uniforms and the tables are finished with white table cloths and polished silverware. The restaurant dining room overlooks a portion of the manicured gardens. On the long weekend the restaurant was fully booked, bookings are clearly essential here! Walk to the end of the gardens and you will see the familiar Australian bush land in the distance. Lots of photo taking opportunities. Australia’s largest underground barrel cellar can be found at Voyager. A tour and tasting session will cost around$35.00.

Bettenay’s Nougat and Wines

A modern cellar door and nougat showroom with a viewing window to the kitchen, where you can watch the making of the soft French style nougat. Floor to ceiling windows give beautiful views of the lake, the property is incredibly scenic. Free wine and nougat tastings are available in the store. Different varieties of the award-winning nougat can be purchased for purchase with some bars priced at $18.95.

Bootleg Brewery

bootleg brewery

Bootleg brewery is located on 73-acres of land in Wilyabrup, the owners are 6th generation settlers of Western Australia. Six boutique beers are produced and delicious pub style food is served in the relaxing grounds of the brewery. Roo and Emu chorizo, pie and a steak sandwich are a couple of menu items to try out. This pub has a great casual atmosphere and be sure to go upstairs for the view of the grounds and to climb into the little observation tower.

Cheeky Monkey Brewery and Cidery

Cheeky monkey 2

A modern boutique brewery, cidery and restaurant with a large open grassed area for groups and families. Next door to the brewery is Killerby wines. Beautiful grassed grounds with picnic tables can be found to the rear of the property. We had lunch at Cheeky Monkey and you can read more about the experience here.

Swings and Roundabouts

After lunch we headed to Swings and Roundabouts winery but trailing behind a tour bus meant we missed a spot at the wine tasting counter. There were 20 people at the cellar door and so instead we wandered around the grounds instead, will have to return to this one. The elevated position of the cellar door and restaurant gives lovely views across the Australian bush paddock. There is a small pizzeria at the back and tea and coffee is served through the day.

Margaret River Providore

Next door to the Margaret River Chocolate Factory is Providore, a gourmet food and wine store. There is free wine and product tasting. Products include gifts, dips, chutney, liqueurs, spice mixes, curry mixes and egg pastas. There is an olive grove and garden next door.

Margaret River Chocolate Factory

For me personally no trip to Margaret River is complete without stopping past two places – Simmo’s icecreamery and the Margaret River Chocolate Factory. A big chocolate shop with a cafe attached is known for its free tastings and it is not uncommon to see a line during the busy periods. There is a great variety of products to purchase and my favourites are the handmade truffles, instant mousse mixture (just add cream) and the giant freckles.

Woody Nook Wines & Woody Nook Cafe

A wonderful dusty and rather rustic winery, set amongst large trees this family run business is a real gem of a find. The cellar door resembles a pub and there is a large rear alfresco area. The property is  not irrigated and produces some unique wines.
