Moana Coffee is one place I’ve been eager to check out for a very long time, and finally when an opportunity arose that had me working nearby I happily seized the moment, stopping past for a solo morning coffee. I’ve been stretching myself across two jobs and while job 1 in the office is predictable, job 2 has me moving around a bit which is great in terms of trying new cafes. Moana opens at 7am – yay – because I thoroughly enjoy an early morning coffee before the day starts. It’s a quiet and somewhat sane part of the day.
Located next to David Jones and across from Pottery Barn is the historical Moana Chambers building, wander upstairs and you’ll find the cafe, which mostly occupies a lovely balcony space. Although at 7am the retail shops are closed I would imagine Moana Coffee to be a wonderful break from the normalities of the city shopping mall. History buffs may appreciate the small details of the art deco stairs that remind me of the Titanic movie and old sign board that appears handwritten. It’s a charming place.
Moana Coffee uses locally roasted Five Senses coffee beans. The long black was undeniably temperature hot and a solid cup of coffee. The breakfast menu is nicely short and simple. I went with the sweet potato smash, a mix of savory and sweet on the plate, toast slathered with spiced and warmed sweet potato mashed, feta, semi sweet chutney and bitter greens. I really enjoyed it, it was a satisfying choice with some vegetables to cram into the day.
